Gloucestershire County Council is proposing to create an extra 30 permanent places at Kingsholm Church of England Primary School to help more parents secure a place at their local school.
In the past two years, the county council has added a number of additional temporary primary school places across Gloucester and Cheltenham to meet increased demand due to a spike in the birth rate.
Kingsholm Primary School temporarily increased its reception year intake by an additional 30 pupils in 2011 and 2012 (from 60 to 90) with demand for primary school places in the area increasing.
The latest forecasts show this trend is likely to continue, so the county council is proposing to make these extra places permanent, meaning the school will offer 90 reception places from September 2013.
The school will be remodelled in stages to eventually provide five additional classrooms and some communal spaces will be extended, including dining and play areas, the library and staff facilities.
Following discussions with the county council, the school's headteacher and governors, and the Gloucester Diocese, have given their support to a consultation now being carried out on the proposals.
Headteacher, Jan Buckland, said: "We are proud our school offers a warm, welcoming and inspirational environment in which children can thrive. As a successful school, Kingsholm is popular with parents in the area. These proposals to permanently increase the number of places would help ensure that as many local families as possible are able to send their children here."
