POLICE and crime commissioner Martin Surl has revealed it cost him more than £7,000 to mount his successful election campaign.
Mr Surl spent £7,350.34 of his own money to run as an independent candidate in the race to become Gloucestershire's police chief.
His declaration of costs to the Electoral Commission, which all candidates have to make at the end of an election, shows he paid out £ 6439.23 on election expenses and £ 911.11 on personal costs.
He said: "I made a pledge from the outset that I would not accept any donations from any businesses or other outside bodies and the figures I have submitted to the returning officer show that I kept my word. It would have been nice to have been able to leaflet every house so that more people felt involved in the election but I could not afford that."
His biggest single expense was advertising at £2563.48.
