Cold weather is likely to drive more birds into gardens in their search for food.
It could mean bumper numbers of garden birds seen in the RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch.
People will be taking part in the world's biggest wildlife survey at home and in parks on January 26 and 27.
More than 9 million birds were counted by 600,000 people last year.
Everyone can join in by spending one hour at any time over the weekend noting the highest number of each bird species at any one time then submitting the results to the RSPB.
Schoolchildren and teachers will be doing the same in their school grounds as part of Big Schools' Birdwatch from January 21 to February 1.
The RSPB's Tony Whitehead said: "It's a great way to get to know the creatures that live around us, and that's especially important for children."
