'Bonkers boundaries' plans revised

BOUNDARY bosses have revised controversial plans that would have seenGloucester city centre become part of the Forest of Dean constituency.

Instead of the proposal to lump the city's central ward into the neighbouring seat, the revised plan would now split Westgate ward in Gloucester and Coombe Hill ward in Tewkesbury between constituencies. But it still means Hempsted would be part of the Forest.

The move has also sparked criticism from Tory MP for Tewkesbury Laurence Robertson who said he was 'disappointed' by the revision which would see Sandhurst, Norton, Twigworth, the Leigh, Deerhurst and Apperley move to the Forest seat.

The overhaul is aimed at slashing the number of Westminster seats by 50 down to 600, and to iron out discrepancies in constituency electorates.

The Boundary Commission, who carried out the review, insisted it was the "only viable option".

But they bowed to public pressure in the revised proposals out today.

Mark Owen, chairman of the Gloucester Branch of Federation of Small Businesses, who led the campaign against the 'bonkers boundaries', said: "To have Gloucester Cathedral, the Docks, Westgate Street and the police station under the jurisdiction of a Forest of Dean MP was ludicrous.

"Everyone is delighted with the decision."

It is still unclear if the proposals will even proceed after the Liberal Democrats pulled the plug on backing the planned overhaul.

The consultation on the revised proposals now runs until December 10.
