Gloucester Rugby: Davies - We got it wrong against London Irish

LACKLUSTRE Glouces- ter let themselves down on Saturday – but Nigel Davies is not demanding any sea-changes this week.

The frustrated Cherry and Whites boss will hold some clear-the-air meetings today – but he said there is no need to panic after Saturday's 18-12 London Irish defeat.

Gloucester slipped to their first Kingsholm defeat in ten games, since the opening day Northampton Saints reverse.

A second home Premiership loss for the season is a hammer blow to the Kingsholm men's play-off ambitions.

Gloucester will have to pull off a big away win further down the line in the season in order to remedy this damaging defeat.

More pressing though is the fact insipid Gloucester failed to fire, lacking intensity, drive and guts in their first Kingsholm loss to Irish since 2006.

Fuming Davies admitted Gloucester 'got it wrong' on Saturday – but rejected any need for wide-ranging change.

He explained: "We're furious with ourselves and furious with this defeat – but that doesn't mean we overreact and start changing everything.

"It's important we don't panic – I won't demand anything different from the players this week.

"We'll analyse the game and react the way we always do.

"But within that there will be a few home truths, that's for sure.

"We won't hold back from criticism, but we never do when it's justified.

"But that doesn't mean that we'll do anything undue or hit each other too hard.

"We've got to respond and look into why this happened and where we went wrong.

"The disappointing thing was we didn't turn up on Saturday, emotionally, and couple that with the error count in our game and that's the reason why we failed.

"We got it wrong as a group, and we don't think that's acceptable.

"We're still very much a work in progress, today showed that we're not good enough yet to slip off the hard work and intensity and the accuracy that we've brought to certain games.

"We have very little control over the game, and that was largely due to the error count and how our set-piece failed to work too.

"I'd have to say, yes, we were complacent. I felt we'd covered off everything we needed to cover off, but on the back of that first-half performance in particular, the lack of intensity and commitment, I would say we had to have been complacent – and I'll take that on the chin."

Gloucester return to Amlin Challenge Cup action this week, taking on Bordeaux in France on Friday night.

The Cherry and Whites can secure a home quarter-final in the competition if they win on Friday then beat Mont de Marsan at Kingsholm a week later.

But Davies' men will probably need convincing wins over both teams in order to do just that.

Gloucester have now failed to score a try in their last three matches, and one win from three games across the Christmas Premiership period is a paltry return.

Rugby director Davies remains unfazed by Gloucester's short dry spell on the try front – but admitted the Cherry and Whites must hit back to form in the coming fortnight.

Saturday's defeat represents the first real test to Davies' Kingsholm tenure – and the Gloucester boss has already impressed with his first move.

By choosing not to hammer his players publicly, while admitting their shortcomings, he has protected his squad.

In return, he can reasonably now demand a response in return.

And that's exactly what he is after.

He continued: "We've got an opportunity to put ourselves into the quarter-finals of this competition, and that's one we need to take.

"It's important that we respond after Saturday, and the best way to do that is to go over to France, put in a good performance and get a good win.

"That won't be easy, but we certainly need to show a reaction, and the players know that too."
