Horses being moved from flooded farmland

Dozens of horses are being moved away from floodwater at a farm near Over.

The horses were initially believed to be stranded without food and word of their predicament spread, leading to a group of residents making their way to the A40 Over Causeway, which overlooks the farmland, to try and help.

But Gloucestershire's fire and rescue service said the animals are all right and are gradually being moved to a farm in Wales to get them away from the bog they are in at the moment.

Crews have been there most of the afternoon and have been using dinghies to reach the animals and help lead them to safety.

Paula Dicks was one of about 10 people to make their way to the site in a bid to get help to the animals.

"It was really bad this morning," she said. "One horse was completely cut off on a piece of land, five or six were stranded in bog and another 20 or so were in a barn which is completely cut off.

"They didn't have any food, some of them are foraging in the mud for something to eat - they were eating mud."

She had been pleading with the RSPCA to come the horses' aid and inspectors eventually arrived to offer assistance, in conjunction with the fire and rescue service.

A fire service spokesman said: "The owner has been movning the horses to Wales over the past couple of days. He can only do five-eight at a time so it's taking a little while but they are ok, they have food and they are not stranded."
