RGS HIGH WYCOMBE 10 SIR THOMAS RICH'S SCHOOL 3
SIR Thomas Rich's run in the Under-18s Daily Mail Cup is over for another year after losing to RGS High Wycombe in the fifth round.
The game had twice been rearranged because of bad weather in the last few weeks and the visitors only had a Ross Preedy penalty to show for their troubles.
The home side, cheered on by a huge crowd, controlled the game through their larger pack and had two unconverted tries to show for their efforts.
With the pitch still quite damp on Tuesday night, there was a possibility the fixture was going to be moved to Maidenhead RFC's 4G pitch which would have suited Tommies' nimble backs.
However, the game went ahead at the school and RGS' bigger forwards ensured the Longlevens outfit were denied the territory to create many scoring opportunities.
The Gloucester side took the lead with Preedy's penalty after 15 minutes and held onto their advantage until just before the interval.
The Wycombe men then stole over in the corner moments before half-time with the conversion missed to go 5-3 ahead at the break.
In the second half, RGS scored again through a catch and drive lineout with the kick again off target to double their lead to 10-3.
Disaster then struck for Rhys Williams' charges when they lost two out of their impressive back row due to injury with 15 minutes to go.
Tommies pounded the Wycombe try-line for the last five minutes to try and get a converted score which would have tied the game.
But the bulky home team managed to hold out and secure their passage to the sixth round where they will face the winners of Truro College and Blundell School.
