Avoid festive perils with a few simple steps says NHS Gloucestershire.
Head of pharmacy Teresa Middleton said: "Minor ailments such as colds, headaches and back pain are very common over the festive season so it is wise to be prepared and make sure you have any prescriptions and medicines you might need before holiday season starts.
"It's a good idea to order your regular prescriptions in advance.
"Doctors' surgeries will be closed on all the public holidays, so anyone with a repeat prescription needs to make sure they collect enough medication to last them throughout the festive period.
"And remember to take your prescribed medication with you is you are visiting family or friends."
Teresa also recommends keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home, with medicines such as paracetamol which can treat everyday illnesses.
Local GP, Dr Charles Buckley, said: "GP and hospital services will be extremely busy over Christmas and the New Year.
"You can help yourself and people who are very ill by being prepared to deal with less serious problems at home when appropriate.
"Stock up on some simple medications before the bank holidays, and if you do need help, please choose the appropriate service that can deal quickly with your problem."
