Gloucestershire jockey Jason Maguire made a winning start to the International meeting aboard the Super Duty at Cheltenham today.
The duo slogged through the testing conditions in the Shloer Novices' Chase to provide leading trainer Donald McCain with his first winner at Prestbury Park outside of the Festival.
Maguire, who lives in Birdlip, and Super Duty made virtually all the running to win by 13 lengths from the Tom George-trained Forgotten Gold, with hot favourite Broadbackbob well beaten after jumping poorly.
McCain said: "He jumped and galloped all the way to the line and he still had his ears up on the run-in.
"He's a good tough and hardy Northern novice chaser and there's something very likeable about him."
Student Josh Halley took time off from studying product design at university in Limerick to land the Glenfarclas Cross-Country Handicap Chase aboard Outlaw Pete, trained by his father John, in the famous green and gold colours of prominent owner JP McManus.
"I can't thank Mr McManus enough for sending the horse to us and for allowing me to get up on him," said Halley.
McManus, owner of Jonjo O'Neill's Jackdaws Castle stables in Temple Guiting, went on to complete a double with At Fishers Cross, ridden by champion jockey AP McCoy, in the CITIPOST Handicap Hurdle.
Master Overseer earned plaudits from jockey Tom Scudamore for the way he toughed it out to win the feature race of the day, the Majordomo Hospitality Handicap Chase.
The giant Plein Pouvoir used to his size to good effect as he outmuscled his rivals to serve up victory Champion trainer Paul Nicholls plans to give Dark Lover a break after he appeared to relish the conditions in cruising to victory under Ruby Walsh in the CF Roberts Electrical and Mechanical Services.
Unlike the majority of other runners on the card, he passed the winning post as a relatively fresh horse to win by 16 lengths and bounce back from defeat at Cheltenham last month.
Nicky Henderson's hopes of winning the British Stallion Studs/Pyment Quantity Surveyors EBF National Hunt Novices' Hurdle for the fourth year in a row were dashed when Royal Boy could finish only second to the Nick Scholfield-ridden Melodic Rendezvous, trained by Jeremy Scott.
