ITALIAN VOTERS HAD THE LAST LAUGH
At last, something good has come out of the Eurozone. The Italians have finally seen their politicians for what they really are and raised two fingers to the mainstream candidates, which means the balance of power in Italy is currently held by a party whose leader is a stand-up comedian.
I think we should follow their example here in the UK and no, I'm not going to churn out the obvious joke about having a government full of comedians already, because comedy is too serious for that.
I've always wanted to see at least one Monster Raving Loony Party candidate actually elected to the House of Commons and it would be fantastic if it happened in Gloucester.
If we ever have an Official Monster Raving Loony candidate in the city, he or she will definitely get my vote. Anyway, many of the MRLP's policies make a great deal more sense than those of the present coalition government.
For example, the MRLP would cut traffic pollution by 50% without introducing any more pedestrianized areas or increases in motoring tax. To achieve this, a bungee rope would be attached to all vehicles, so no fuel would be required for their return journeys.
To save confusion, the term 'email' would be outlawed. Instead, messages from men would be hemails, and from women shemails, the only exception being for natives of Yorkshire, who will take a unisex approach and use 'e-by-gum-mails'.
In the past, I have considered standing for election to the city council as a MRLP candidate but dismissed the idea on the grounds that I don't see why a bloke of my age should be expected to stand. I shall therefore wait until legislation allows me to sit for election.
I would also replace council tax with something I call the Blue Tax. Every household would be provided with a slice of blu-tack, which they would attach to their council tax bill and then tell the council where to stick it.

LYING IN WAIT
Also on politics; I don't know who did or said what in the on-going saga of Lord Rennard scandal but Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg demonstrated just how much politicians hate it when the press exposes their alleged wrongdoing. The Deputy PM accused journalists investigating a cover-up of being 'self-appointed detectives' which shows that members of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords long for the days when their word was taken as gospel.
We have a young lady by the name of Mandy Rice-Davies to thank for the fact that what our glorious leaders say is not necessarily accepted as the truth. Mandy was giving evidence at the trial of Stephen Ward, charged with living off immoral earnings in the Profumo Affair, in 1963 and when the prosecuting counsel pointed out that Lord Astor denied an affair with her, or having even met her, she replied; "Well, he would, wouldn't he?"

BACK ON TRACK
Even when I was young and fit enough to run around an athletics track, I was never in danger of winning a gold medal. But for those who aspire to such heights, it must be fantastic news that the crumbling Black Bridge site at Podsmead has been given a £380,000 makeover. Now called the Black Bridge Jubilee Track, it was officially declared open by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal and will be run by the charity 'Gloucester Athletics Track Management Ltd'.
Such facilities are essential if we're going to encourage youngsters to become champions in the future, so everyone involved in making it a reality deserves credit.

Charlton Kings Cricket Club face delay in battle with widow Jacki Mitchell to continue playing on Ryeworth Fields

Cricketers have been bowled a googly by a wealthy widow over a patch of land which they have used for more than a century.

The Greenway Lane ground in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, has been used by generations of villagers to stage matches and train teams.

Charlton Kings Cricket Club, founded in 1885, claimed it had a 'gentleman's agreement' with the landowner to use a patch of his land as an outfield area, which makes up a fifth of the Ryeworth Fields pitch.

But following his death, widow Jacki Mitchell staked a legal claim to the land on the grounds that the club had no right of ownership.

The board of Charlton Kings Cricket Club filed a counter-claim, stating that the land had been occupied and in use for the last century.

Both parties have been locked in an 18-month court battle over the land, which has already cost the club £80,000, and which it has warned could put it out of business if it loses.

The fight was due to end yesterday following a four-day trial at the High Court in Birmingham.

But Judge Mr Justice Morgan ruled that he could not reach a decision on the dispute after barristers highlighted a last-minute legal technicality.

He ordered that the trial be adjourned for two months to allow legal teams to investigate an apparent tenancy agreement between the board of trustees and the then-owner of the land, which was drawn up in 1947.

The judge granted both legal teams time to investigate the issues arising from the document, which was only uncovered this week.

He said: "I'm quite sure that if I take a decision today I'm going to produce a result that is not in accordance with the correct legal position. I think both of you are very vulnerable to the wrong answer emerging."

The judge added that he regretted the delay but had no choice but to put the case back.

Speaking after yesterday's hearing, cricket development officer Geoff White admitted that the delay was proving frustrating.

He added: "We will do everything we can to ensure that cricket continues to be played on the ground, which has hosted matches for over 100 years."

The case was adjourned and will be heard in London on a date yet to be fixed.

Hundreds of people have gathered in Newent to remember Bethan Rosetta.

The 20 year-old former Hartpury College student, who lived in Newent, was found dead by a dog walker at the town's lake on February 9.

Her funeral was held last week at Llandeilo chapel near Maenclochog in Pembrokshire, where much of her family live, so today a special memorial service was held at St Mary's Church in Newent for loved ones living in the Forest of Dean.

The church was packed with family and friends, who were asked to wear pink items of clothing as it was Bethan's favourite colour. Those in attendance also carried daffodils into the church on arrival.

Forest Green held to goalless draw at Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE UNITED 0 FOREST GREEN ROVERS 0

FOREST Green have lost more ground on their Blue Square Bet Premier play-off rivals after a toothless showing.

The best chance of the first half came in the 38th minute, Rovers captain Jared Hodgkiss fizzing over a low cross for the onrushing Yan Klukowski to bring a fine reaction save from Craig Ross.

An attempted cross by Kevin Roberts almost caught out Ross' opposite number Sam Russell, who had to backpedal before palming the ball around the far post.

Another good chance came Forest Green's way on 64 minutes, as Ross dropped the ball after trying to claim through a crowd and Chris Stokes' shot struck home skipper Roberts on the line.

Lee Fowler's free-kick three minutes travelled to an unmarked Jamie Turley at the far post, but the big defender was at full stretch and failed to find the target.

Dave Hockaday made an attacking change with 20 minutes left, replacing Fowler with Ben Wright, and James Norwood saw a goal chalked off following some pushing from a corner.

There was still life in Cambridge though, and Charlie Wassmer's free header had to be tipped over by Russell before Rory McAuley blazed over from a glorious position.

Substitute Matty Taylor was unceremoniously replaced by Yemi Odubade with two minutes left – much to his obvious displeasure – but there was to be no breakthrough.

See Monday's Citizen for Peter Orchard's match overview, match reaction and pictures.

It was a nerve-wracking, intense 90 minutes at the Abbey Business Stadium but it was superb to watch Cheltenham hold on to win 2-1 against AFC Wimbledon. The team started well, and I was impressed by the determined efforts in midfield, and despite a few hairy moments in the box - Midson missing an open goal that could have levelled the scores agonising to watch – the team defended well. Moving ahead to Tuesday's home game against Chesterfield and next Saturday's away game against Burton Albion, the side have to hold on to the confidence displayed today. Simply, they need to start scoring more goals and make the most of the goals they do score. Fans know CTFC have seen too many draws this season, and confidence and winning momentum moving forward are now crucial. At the bottle-end of the season and in given how close the league is now, getting three points whenever possible has never been more important. OUT OF TEN Scott Brown – Made two or three very good, solid saves in the first half and could not do much about brilliant goal from Dickenson for Wimbledon. Shame not to get a clean sheet. 8/10 Keith Lowe – Caught my eye. Was quick on to the ball, diligent down the wing and had a few lovely touches. His crosses in to the box were mainly solid and played well with Penn and Taylor in midfield. 8/10 Billy Jones – Calm under pressure and defended solidly. Excellent cross into the box to set up the Elliott goal, demonstrating his talent in set-pieces 7/10 Darren Carter – A few nervous moments, but his well-struck goal (56) proved crucial. Replaced by Kaid Mohamed shortly after scoring but certainly made his presence known on the pitch. 6/10 Steve Elliott – A lovely goal to open the scoreline in the 10th minute with a well-placed header. Not afraid to get stuck in and worked very hard. 7/10 Sam Deering - A joy to watch and lively on the ball. Quick and tireless, he put in a bullish performance that you couldn't ask for much more from. Tiny but mighty, he created chances and added pace to the game. Fans and my MOTM 9/10 Marlon Pack - Some lovely passing work and aggressive play but at times was a little quiet. Was lucky not to get booked, but certainly had an impact on the game. 7/10 Russ Penn – Despite the yellow card, Penn had a real impact in this game. Tenacious, aggressive and quick on to every ball, you couldn't fault his efforts. Replaced by McGlashan in the 86th minute and got recognition from the fans he deserved when he went off. 8/10 Paul Benson – Couldn't do much up front today with the lack of opportunities coming through. Quiet game in an isolated position as lone striker. 6/10 Jason Taylor – Worked very well with Penn and Lowe and was aggressive in his challenges. Overall, a solid effort in midfield. 7/10 Michael Hector – A few beautiful passes and crosses stood out and did well to limit damage when Wimbledon were attacking. Solid and reliable. 7/10

Wills and Kate join guests as Olympic medalist Laura Bechtolsheimer marries Mark Tomlinson

OLYMPIC medalist Laura Bechtolsheimer was given a royal send-off as she married polo player Mark Tomlinson in Switzerland.

The couple, who tied the knot at a snowy ceremony in the upmarket ski resort of Arosa, were joined by family and friends including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Close friends of Mark, who plays for the England team, the young Royals chatted to fellow guests during their short stay at the holiday destination.

Laura, from Ampney St Peter, near Cirencester, became engaged to Mark shortly after the Games last summer, which saw the riding star win gold and silver as part of Britain's equestrian success.

They had been introduced by Laura's brother, Goetz, two years earlier.

As the newly-married couple walked past them, an evidently delighted Kate threw a handful of confetti into the air.

A slightly scrappy win but we'll take what we can get at the moment. Two well taken goals were the difference although the result could have been different had Jack Midson tucked away his seemingly easy chance. We seem to be in a knack of not finishing off games when the chance is there. We had two 'two on one' situations today where the final pass was poor and allowed Wimbledon to clear their lines. This was a game that we needed to win. We won so I won't complain at all, but we need now to go on a run and win four or five games in a row. I still think third place is very much up for grabs despite the fact we've played one more game than most teams around us. Mark Yates' team selection was spot on today, the five man midfield is doing us wonders even if it limits chances for our hit and miss strikers. No goal for Paul Benson today but I can't remember him actually having a shot. We have four very capable strikers but at the moment I wouldn't drop any of the midfield to make way for Byron Harrison, Darryl Duffy (whose chances are going to be very limited from now until May) and Shaun Harrad. Our next three or four games will decide what will happen in May. Will it be; play-offs? Automatic promotion? Or are we definitely destined for another season in League Two? All mentioned are definite possibilities and as the season is quickly drawing to an end, I hope Cheltenham are involved in the first two and not the latter! COYR! OUT OF TEN Scott Brown: 6 Didn't have a save to make and was helpless for the goal Keith Lowe: 6 Coped well with the Wimbledon wide men and his long throws caused mischief. Michael Hector: 7 Defended excellently, looked solid in the air and very rarely got beaten Steve Elliott: 8 My man of the match, scored a nice header and put his body on the line constantly. Billy Jones: 6 Got beaten a lot but his delivery proved crucial once again. Lovely cross for Elliott's goal. Russ Penn: 6 Slightly off the boil today but possibly should have won a penalty in the first half. Marlon Pack: 7 Another reason why we'll miss him, kept the side ticking over today and executed some fantastic passes. Jason Taylor: 7 Had a very sound game, won some crucial headers and broke up play well. Sam Deering: 8 I'm glad he's getting his chance, buzzed around the pitch and created space and opportunities. Darren Carter: 6 Took his goal very well but otherwise an average performance. Paul Benson: 6 Not much service but held the ball up well. Kaid Mohamed: 6 Didn't do much but his presence often creates a spark which is needed. Jermaine McGlashan: N/A Byron Harrison: 6 Not really on long enough but offers more pace than Benson Do you agree? Have you say in the comment section below. Want to have your say? Fan's view of Cheltenham Town's 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon win with Laurie Cleevely: An impressive performance from the Robins against a strong Wimbledon team. I felt the first half was a little bland in terms of exiting football but we were able to score a good goal with the set-piece abilities Billy Jones holds. I was good to see Billy back in the starting eleven and to add to his assists, it gives another dimension to our play in which we can score goals from. A strong header from Stevie, one which we all know he's capable of doing when it lands where he wants it. Deering provided our attacking spark, he caused problems to the AFC Wimbledon back four and former Cheltenham captain Benno on an emotional return, he deserved his warm welcome after the recent departure. Sometimes in the first half we just needed to pull the trigger and get some shots on their goal. Paul Benson seemed anonymous, countless crosses not being accurate and he wasn't getting enough balls to his feet. That said, we settled and played some nice stuff, with Marlon Pack at the heart yet again. We started to look like a promotion chasing team and perhaps could have nicked another in the first half. Russ Penn made some strong driving runs and has certainly become more attacking of late, thriving to create chances. However, this style of play knackers out the skipper and that can be costly when we are put on the back foot. Second half we looked a lot more threatening and there was a higher tempo to the game. We looked strong going forward and created numerous breaks at the Wombles back four, but we lacked that cutting edge. But it was great to see Carter get another with a neat finish. I like the new formation and playing all 5 central midfielders, it gives Deering a freer role to use his creativity. Marlon Pack has more room to manoeuvre in the middle and bring the full-backs into the game. It worked extremely well at times in the game. The intro of the wingers off the bench worked well and puts tired legs under pressure and they should have conjured up another goal. It was disappointing however not to hold on to the clean sheet and have make the last 10 minutes a little on edge. I was amazed by Midson's glaring miss, but Dickenson shouldn't have been able to get through, Elliot and hector must stay strong and mobile at centre half if we are to challenge for a top spot. Not to take a shine off an important win, to keep us firing up the table. Keep it going for Tuesday. Come on you Robins! Do you agree with Laurie's views? Have you say in the comment section below.
