THIS year's harvest festival generated a bonanza for the Gloucester Foodbank.
The project, based in Great Western Road, helps those in need of support in times of financial difficulty by distributing food.
In this year's festival, they received 7.5 tonnes of food from 40 schools who wanted to help families in need.
"It is the most we have ever received during a harvest festival," said manager Anneliese Sterry.
The Citizen has linked up with the Foodbank to launch our Feed a Family appeal for Christmas.
We are asking our readers to donate just £1.50 which will staff there help feed a family of four for three days with food parcels.
St Peter's Church, in London Road, donated three quarters of a tonne of food during the harvest festival. Canon Liam Slattery said: "The Foodbank is hugely important for a growing number of people and what really strikes me is the support it gets and the generosity of those who donate to it."
It comes as Quedgeley mum Vickie Robins used the Foodbank twice. She said: "I worry so much about feeding the children, I worry that social services will come and take them away if they don't get enough to eat."
The charity works on a referral basis with 90 agencies in the city.
Volunteers and staff are collecting food at Tesco Quedgeley and Brockworth from 9am to 6pm today.
