'Bewildering' toilet scheme needs sorting, Gloucester councillors told

Gloucester can never call itself a 21st Century city without proper public toilets, it has been claimed.

And the city council has agreed to calls to look into consulting residents on how to improve its conveniences.

The bus station is the only city centre spot with a public toilet at the moment. The council also promotes the Community Toilet Scheme, which sees businesses and attractions put a sticker in their window if they are happy for people to use their loo.

However, tabling a motion at the full council meeting last night, Councillor Sebastian Field (LD, Kingsholm and Wotton) called the scheme "inadequate and bewildering".

And Coun Jeremy Hilton, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, told the Tory administration: "It's not good enough. Pull your socks up and do a better job."

He called the bus station toilets "awful".

Things would improve, the Conservative group said, with the King's Square redevelopment but they agreed to an amended motion to also provide "budget options" to design and build a modern new toilet block in the city centre.

Coun Paul James, (C, Longlevens), leader of the council, said: "We do have a number of council buildings in the Community Toilet Scheme, possibly we could make that clearer and more obvious.

"I think it's right that we do work together to find a better solution for the city but we do it based on evidence and on the basis of the financial position the council is in."

Council officers will be instructed to draw up proposals to consult residents, to improve the bus station toilets, to look at possibilities for a new toilet block and to improve signage for the Community Toilet Scheme.
