Children in Need in Gloucestershire

WEARING pyjamas, sparkly shoes and spotty clothes to school proved to be a whole lot of fun when youngsters from around the county raised money for Children in Need.

Hundreds of school children from Calton, Lydney, and Stroud schools had fun with their outfits while learning some important lessons about childhood poverty.

Pupils Grace Villis and Iman Raja, both 10, from Calton Junior school in Gloucester were enjoying the day.

Iman, who wore multi-coloured spots to school, said it had been good learning about children less fortunate than herself, some of whom couldn't go to school. She said: "It would be hard not to be able to go to school. It's a great place to talk to friends and learn."

Grace said: "It's fun wearing pyjamas to school. I like that you raise loads of money for Children in Need."

At Lydney Church of England Community School, teachers were met by a sea of young ones dressed in colourful polkadots.

Joint executive head teacher, Caroline Holcombe, said: "They've had fun, but they've also understood the seriousness behind the day – even the reception class – about helping others, and how every little bit counts."

Stroud Valley Community School head teacher, Debbie Sleep, said: "We've got the teddy police – if you're caught without your teddy bear you get an on-the-spot fine."

Year six pupil Ralph Armond brought homemade custard into school, so that he could be "pied" in the face for £33 sponsorship.
