Old Bell Lights Up

One of the city's oldest buildings is set to feature in the spotlight.

The dark brown timber facade of the Old Bell in Southgate Street will soon benefit from a lighting scheme which will highlight and enhance the main features of the first and second floors.

The design is aimed at making the details of the Grade I listed building, dating back from 1665, stand out.

White LED rope lights will be used to provide a glow under the windows, with low-energy up lighters to light up the carved detailing in other areas.

Councillor Paul James, Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Gloucester City Council said: "Many of us walk around the city without always appreciating the magnificent buildings that surround us. Projects like this help to highlight our most striking buildings and also help to make the city centre a more attractive place to be once the sun goes down.

"The detailing of the Old Bell, which is sometimes referred to as the 'Old Blue Shop', is fantastic and we are extremely fortunate to have such an amazing building in our Gate Streets."

Funding for the project has come from the city council's City Centre Investment Fund.

The work will be carried out in the evenings to minimise disruption and will be complete by the end of August.
