Gloucester Cathedral has said that lead thefts are on the decline, continuing a county-wide reduction in the crime. Just over 600 metal thefts were reported to Gloucestershire police last year, down from almost 800 incidents in 2012. The cathedral said it suffered a "sustained" period of lead thefts around two years ago from the Cloister roof, but this has since died down. It now uses a light beam and smart water, which helps to identify offenders, as a deterrent against further theft. Cathedral Chapter Steward, Mr Mark Beckett said: "We are pleased to say that no lead has been stolen since then and hope this trend continues"
