Citizen Editor: Baton of Remembrance must never be dropped

We are now in the final week of the poppy collections in Gloucestershire.

On Sunday, all over our county, people will be at our many war memorials to give thanks to those in the Services who have made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.

That sacrifice has not just come in the two World Wars, but increasingly in the ensuing conflicts, particularly in Iraq and currently in Afghanistan.

We encourage you to buy your poppy and wear it with pride this week until Remembrance Sunday.

Yesterday, this writer was at Tesco in Brockworth where there was a splendid poppy stall. They told me they had raised £3,000 in the store in just four days.

What a marvellous effort and typical of the Royal British Legion fundraisers in our county ,who last year raised over £700,000 during the annual Poppy Appeal.

These fundraisers are real diamonds.

On page 29 of tomorrow's Citizen (Monday) we picture the stalwarts of the village of Amberley near Stroud who got long service awards for  collecting — some for up to 30 years.

Garry Mills, vice chairman of the Gloucestershire branch of the RBL said that for a small village to raise  over £6,000 during last year's collection was fantastic.

We agree — what a great effort.

The Citizen will always support those who keep the memories of the fallen alive so that the younger generation will appreciate that sacrifice and help the cause as they grow up.

The batton of remembrance must never be dropped.
