BOOK experts have selected 50 books all children should have on their shelves. The Times, which sponsors the Cheltenham Literature Festival, has compiled a list of 50 books children should have red. The books were picked out by a panel including Amanda Craig, children's books critic, Lucy Coats, children's books consultant and founder of Bookstart, Tom Gatti, Saturday Review editor, authors Anthony McGowan and Katherine Langrish and children's literature expert Nicholas Tucker. Topping the list is JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit, which was adapted into a film released late last year. Described as "the greatest children's book ever written", the book details the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire.
