Politicians wade in to row over closure of Dursley ambulance station

AMBULANCE chiefs have changed their tune over why they are leaving the Dursley station.

On Tuesday, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) claimed the landlord wouldn't renew the lease but yesterday said it didn't want to stay.

Politicians were angry at the apparent about-turn and closure.

"They need to demonstrate closing Dursley ambulance station won't make response times worse," said county council leader Mark Hawthorne, whose party members on the health overview and scrutiny committee are calling for an emergency meeting to get to the bottom of the matter.

A press release issued by the trust on Tuesday said station landlord Stroud District Council will not renew the lease – then an updated version appeared on the trust website saying the station will need to be removed in accordance with the contract. Yesterday a trust spokesman clarified its position.

"The lease runs out on December 31 2013 and we have decided not to renew the lease, along with the council," he said. "It's a joint decision. We have decided not to renew it."

The trust is "exploring a range of options" and plans to base a rapid response vehicle at Vale Community Hospital in Dursley, and a dual crew ambulance at Stroud ambulance station.

A Stroud District Council spokesman said: "As far as we are aware, moving from the site suits the ambulance trust and we have had no communication from them indicating that they wish to stay there. Should they wish to continue the lease we would be happy to discuss this with them."
