COMPETITIVE parents have doubled the amount they spend on end-of-year gifts for their child's teachers, according to a survey by Netmums.
In a bid to impress at the school gates, some parents spend £10 on presents, with some happy to spend £20 or more.
The survey revealed some luxury gifts had been given to teachers, including a Harrods hamper, a spa day, a week's holiday at the family villa and a Tiffany necklace.
Siobhan Freegard, the founder of Netmums, said: "While for most mums and dads, giving a little end-of-year gift is simply a nice token of their appreciation, for others it's a status symbol to boast about in the playground or a marker that they expect special treatment for their child."
The most common gift is chocolates, the survey found.
