Can you identify the caterpillars which weaved these spectacular web formations on a bush near Gloucester? The bush, on the Gloucester to Tewkesbury road, became engulfed by the curious silken tomb last Friday night. Drybrook man Gary Taylor, 48, took the impressive pictures. He said: "I drive on this road every day and it just appeared overnight. "It looked so different I stopped the car and took the photographs." Mr Taylor said he believed they may be the so-called toxic caterpillars oak processionary moth (OPM) The OPM grubs are covered with bristles which can be blown in clouds in the wind, causing serious irritation to the eyes, lungs and skin. In extreme circumstances, they can kill by triggering asthmatic attacks and even anaphylaxis. However a quick investigation online by The Citizen suggests the webs were made by a 'small ermine moth ' - one of nine UK species commonly mistaken for the toxic variety. If you know definitely what the caterpillars are please use the comment facility to let us know.
