AN environmental group from Bishop's Cleeve hoping to close a toxic waste site near their village had their appeal defeated yesterday.
Safety in Waste and Rubbish Disposal (Sward) lost its fourth appeal for a judicial review in the High Court regarding the dumping site at Wingmoor Farm.
The Grundon-run site had been given another 20 years to run by Gloucestershire County Council in 2009.
Sward spokeswoman Barbara Farmer said: "It has been a triumph that the community has had its voice heard in one of the highest courts in the land.
"This closes a chapter but it is not the end of our story. We will continue to represent the community on the Wingmoor forum."
Andrew Short, Grundon estates director, said all of Sward's attempts had been based on the same argument.
He said: "We don't really understand what Sward is hoping to achieve by repeatedly asking the same questions, taking up the time of council staff and solicitors to answer them.
"The responsible agencies – including the planning authority, the Environment Agency and the Health Protection Agency all consider that the site operates efficiently and safely, it provides a cost effective, long term recycling and disposal outlet for local businesses and employs over 40 people."
