SMART new school PE kit costing £80-plus has upset some parents fearing its expense and suitability.
When Severn Vale School in Quedgeley asked parents for feedback on the fresh look, many complained.
But headteacher Peter Rowland said changes were made after a wide consultation and it would prove good value because it's of better quality.
Costs vary but a full kit including an optional base layer (£11) and tracksuit (£34) comes to more than £80.
One parent said: "What about the girls who are not comfortable about their body and the parents who cannot afford the really high-priced track suit bottoms?"
Another said she liked the look but it wasn't necessary for everyday school PE lessons.
"It is very expensive for a PE kit and is a ridiculous cost for low-income families with siblings who will later join the school," she said.
One more parent said the shirts are fine for children representing the school but questioned whether they were needed for everyday use.
But Liz Robinson, who has a daughter starting in September, completely endorsed the new look.
"It's smart and impressive," she said. "Having a large family I understand the concern of parents about cost but I would rather pay for something that's longer lasting and smart."
Mr Rowland said the school consulted widely and it had been well received. The new kit comes in this September and was phased to follow the new school uniform the year before. "The majority of comments we have had from consultation events and letters has been supportive," he said.
"I don't want parents not to get value out of the old kit so that can be worn until it needs replacing," he said.
John Merrick, of the Trutex school clothing shop in Gloucester, said the same kit is used by other schools and in most cases costs a little more, adding: "The Severn Vale kit is priced very very competitively. It's nicer to wear than the old kit, it washes better and it more up-to-date."
