TODAY The Citizen is fighting back against unemployment by publishing more than 700 job vacancies in the county.

The Jobs Extra supplement is about helping people find employment as part of a wider Get Gloucestershire Working campaign.

There are more than 700 county vacancies currently available on the Jobcentre Plus site and we have worked with the Government agency to publish every single one of them today.

In the supplement we also have advice for parents and jobseekers of all ages including those leaving university, school and college.

In Gloucester 3,243 people claimed Jobseekers' Allowance in April, according to the Office for National Statistics. In Stroud 1,395 claimed the benefit, while in the Forest of Dean this figure was 1,265.

To help the young unemployed get a job, the Government has created a £1billion Youth Contract. The contract, launched last year, financially supports businesses who create jobs for 18-24 year olds. This includes a wage incentive of up to £2,275 for each youngster it takes on. Half-a-million new opportunities are set to be created for young people through the contract.

Gloucester Jobcentre Plus manager Debbie Boon said: "It's great that The Citizen is making people aware of the job opportunities available in the area.

"Jobcentre Plus can offer a range of support to help jobseekers get back in to work. Through the Youth Contract its easier than ever for businesses to give young unemployed people a job, training or work experience."

Entrepreneur David Purchase, owner of On Toast cafes at Gloucester Docks and in Matson, said he backed the drive to get people into work and that he was throwing his weight behind the supplement.

He said: "As a local businessman I fully support this supplement, which can only be positive move in these challenging economic conditions."

The Citizen's editor Jenny Eastwood said: "For anyone looking for a job today's Citizen is essential reading. We hear so many stories about the amount of people out of work but at the same time, we know there are the jobs out there. We decided to run every single county job being advertised today through Jobcentre Plus to demonstrate what work is available in the county and the number of vacancies stands at more than 700 vacancies which is a big figure."
