A NEW scheme set up to improve people's mental health through reading is set to kick off across Gloucestershire.

The Reading Well scheme was given its national launch earlier this week by the Society of Chief Librarians and the Reading Agency.

In Gloucestershire it will build on the existing Books on Prescription scheme.

Staff from the 2gether NHS Foundation Trust will be visiting libraries in the coming weeks to speak to readers about the benefits of reading to help yourself.

Councillor Kathy Williams (C, Longlevens), Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member for long term care, said: "Reading is just one of many ways in which people with mental health issues can learn about their condition, but in their own time and at their own pace."

Therapists from 2gether will be visiting Gloucester Library between 10am and noon on June 10 and Cheltenham Library on June 12 at the same times to talk about how the scheme works.
