THE Princess Royal has launched the national Healthy Eating Week by seeing how Brimscombe children grow their own veg.

Princess Anne was at Brimscombe CofE Primary, just down the road from her Gatcombe Park home, to chat to youngsters about the food they were planting, nurturing and then enjoying on their plates.

She toured classrooms and the fruit and veg patches outside at the start of the British Nutrition Foundation's special week, which has 1.25million children signed up to take part.

The Princess was shown around by headteacher Karen Riordan who, with her staff, brings food production and healthy eating into all areas of the curriculum.

Brimscombe was also the first Gloucestershire school to win the county's own healthy schools award.

"Thank you very much for that, I hope you really will learn something," said the Princess Royal after the whole school sang her a catchy farewell song about good food and exercise.

Reception class pupil Scarlet Sykes presented the Princess with a posy of flowers as she left.

And Daisy Oliver, 11, gave the VIP visitor a basket of scones and jam homemade at the school, plus the recipe cards so the Princess could make them herself in her own royal kitchen.
