BEN Greer knows first-hand the sacrifice made by soldiers in Afghanistan.
A Chinook helicopter crewman, he helped evacuate casualties from the front line, as part of the Immediate Response Team.
He is now taking part in the Big Lift, which arrived in Cheltenham's Pittville Park yesterday, to honour those who have died in the conflict.
To date, 441 British service personnel have lost their lives in Afghanistan. Ben is walking 4.4 miles in 101 towns and cities in memory of each one, while wearing a backpack weighing 220lbs – the weight of an injured serviceman.
Ben said: "Though the aspiration is to raise £100,000, it is more important to create a focal point for the public to show their support for the families."
Money raised will be donated to the ABF The Soldiers' Charity, the RAF Benevolent fund, The Royal Navy and Marines Charity, SSAFA and Help for Heroes. The walk will finish at Buckingham Palace on July 21.
