SHE is a 'shining example' to those decades younger.

Dedicated Mary Stormont is still working to help people in need – at the age of 90.

The pensioner, who has just celebrated her birthday, volunteers once a week for the Lifelink charity shop, based at the Elim Christian Centre, in St George's Road, Cheltenham.

It supports the church's international aid projects in far-flung places such as Congo and Tanzania, as well as local causes.

As a seven-year-old, she raised her first money for overseas missions making lavender bags out of organza triangles tied with a ribbon.

She sold them for 6d to support her uncle, the Rev HC Phillips, who worked in the deprived area of Nelspruit in South Africa in 1928.

Centre manager Chris Bond said: "Her heart for helping people has not diminished a bit over the years.

"She's still so vibrant and an example to young and old.

"She's willing to get up and come and be fully involved in what's going on when she could be sitting back and taking it easy."

In charge of the shop's book section, Mrs Stormont keeps it well-stocked and in strict alphabetical order.

"I enjoy doing it and my faith in God keeps me going and gives me strength," she said. "I've kept young and nobody thinks I'm 90."

Mrs Stormont's father, FB Phillips, ran the Elim Publishing Company, which became Victory Press. Her mother bound the pages of the early editions of the Elim Evangel magazine, with stitching.

Mary worked for a London newspaper firm and became a private secretary for Paternoster Press.

She married Philip Stormont and made her first ever flight, through a thunderstorm, in the 1970s to join him on his South African mission.

The couple, who have three daughters, retired to Cheltenham in the 1980s. Mary catered for the missionary council meetings and archived overseas' work, before jumping at the chance to work in the shop three years ago.
