CHELTENHAM or Gloucester? It is a local, largely friendly, rivalry that has been running for years is a question we have heard or asked at least once.

We all have our opinions – mainly dependent on which side of the Golden Valley we come from – and it is a debate that will never be fully settled.

But we are certain which side we are on and here we take a look at what makes the Spa town the renowned beauty it has become and why we think it is a little better than Gloucester.

■ History: For Cheltenham it was a little like being picked first for a sports team.

King George III's visit to cure him of illnesses left him praising the beautiful town. The royals went sightseeing, indulged in local food and drank the spa water every morning.

But even before that, Cheltenham was selected to be the central hub for surrounding areas by Henry III.

■ Shopping: Tailored tuxes and hand-made vintage items? Head to Montpellier for their boutiques for those pieces. If you're looking to spend a fraction of that, then the High Street stretches out before you, complete with two arcades and the latest fashion.

■ Geography: It is the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds' and if you wanted to look further afield, Wales, Birmingham, Bristol are all in easy striking distance.

Named after the River Chelt, the town is linked to the rest of the Cotswolds – naturally the perfect gateway.

■ City Life in a Town: Montpellier and The Imperial Gardens are more than a match for Gloucester Docks.

If you're after the city lifestyle, you don't even need to travel to Chelsea and Kensington to get the London buzz.

If it's the city variety you're looking for, there are numerous restaurants from Italian to South Indian and Turkish.

■ Festivals: Cheltenham began the first Literature Festival of its kind.

Not surprising then that people from all over the world had flown over just to see the likes of JK Rowling and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Then you have the Jazz, Science, Music, Folk, Poetry, Design, Ukelele and Fashion Festivals, all of which draw in an audience that is as varied as the festivals themselves.

■ Nightlife: Being a student town means there are always Happy Hours for everyone to take advantage of, particularly sipping mojitos and cosmopolitans in the quirkier bars and clubs.

If that isn't your kind of beverage, some of the best Cotswold pubs are in Cheltenham, where you're welcomed in by the owners and given beer to taste before you've even said the word 'pint'.

Cultural offerings include the Everyman theatre, the Playhouse, The Bacon, there are big names at Cheltenham Town Hall, the cinema and the comedy nights.

■ Cheltenham Racecourse: If the happy hour prices aren't enough for you, head to Cheltenham Racecourse and let the winners buy the rounds.

New Year's Day races and Gold Cup Week bring the best atmosphere to the town.

■ Local Food: Whoever said cheese, wine and local produce is for the French to master has not been to Cheltenham.

Meat, eggs, honey, cakes, fruit and veg are all produced locally, meaning the restaurants and pubs serve up the best.

If you fancy yourself as a cook, all of these can be sourced locally.

Only the best for the royally-selected town.
