AMBITIOUS individuals with a flair for leadership are being sought to take advantage of an £80,000 grant in Matson.

The cash has been given to Together in Matson, and it will fund them for the next four years.

The money came from the coffers of Martin Surl, Gloucestershire's Police and Crime Commissioner.

Vanessa Worrall, project manager of the Redwell Centre-based group, said: "We are very grateful to the commissioner because getting funding is becoming more and more difficult.

"It means we can consolidate on the good work that has been done over the years and we will also be able to train more members of the community to be leaders which will enable us to start a few more groups that are wanted and needed by the community."

Over 100 young people aged between eight and 19 visit the centre Monday to Saturday. Exercise classes are run throughout the week for adults and a community gym is popular with all age groups.

There are also exercise and educational classes for over 50s which are well attended.

Coach trips are organised to events, parks and entertainment venues and community fun days are also organised.

Liam Kelch, chairman of the Matson and Robinswood residents group, has welcomed the funding.

He said: "It will come to us over four years which is fantastic. It is extremely difficult to get funding nowadays, and most of it is given year to year so planning beyond 12 months is almost impossible.

"Most of their provision is for youth, which is brilliant, but they have been branching out to cater for older people too. They have also developed the building, adding a gym and offices which is to be applauded." Last year Together in Matson won £1,829.52 as part of The Citizen's wish campaign.

They have also been short listed for the national TPAS Awards (Tenant Participation Advisory Service) by housing provider Gloucester City Homes.

Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl said: "Projects like this are vital for building community spirit.

"Matson has always been an area with a strong sense of identity and independence. By tapping into that Together in Matson has done great work in reducing anti-social behaviour and isolation among all age groups."
