MEN who may have held vital clues to a savage attack have been ruled out by police.

Yesterday those indentified in CCTV footage released by Gloucestershire Constabulary came forward, but were not able to help officers track down the attackers.

The incident happened on February 1 between 7.30pm and 7.40pm in the underpass near Kwik Fit on Dr Newton's Way, Stroud.

The victim, a 21-year-old man from Stroud, was walking along the underpass when he was approached by two men. One of the men asked for the victim's mobile phone. The second offender then produced a weapon, thought to be a small hand saw. After a scuffle, the victim fell and was kicked and punched causing facial injuries and was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Anyone with to help the investigation should call Gloucestershire police on 101 quoting incident number 398 of February 1.
