TWO teenagers have been arrested after a man was seriously injured in a fight outside a pub in Lydney.

Police are still investigating how he got a puncture wound to the stomach in the attack, near The Swan Hotel.

Emergency services were called to Newerne Street just before 1am yesterday after the 'fracas' broke out.

The victim was taken to hospital suffering from a head injury, broken leg and 'stab wound' to the stomach.

It was initially believed the 39-year-old from Lydney had been stabbed in the abdomen by another person and was unconscious.

But police investigating the crime say it is more likely the injury was caused by broken glass on the floor.

Detective Inspector Alastair Graham said: "We don't believe a weapon was used. We are keeping an open mind as to how the injuries have been sustained.

"But it was more likely from rolling around on the floor with broken glass. We are almost certain it wasn't a stabbing."

He said it was unclear if the fight had started in The Swan Hotel or just outside it.

Several witnesses have been spoken to, but he said they were 'inebriated' at the time of the attack, and police were still trying to piece together what had happened.

Officers were making door-to-door inquiries yesterday and he appealed for new witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said it had received a flurry of 999 calls just before 1am.

He added: "Initial callers reported a fight in which a male had suffered a punch to the head. There were concerns he was unconscious.

"However, subsequent information from police who arrived on scene while we were en route confirmed the patient was conscious and breathing and alert.

"As well as a head injury he had sustained a suspected broken leg and a stab wound to the abdomen."

The victim was still in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital yesterday evening but his condition is not believed to be life threatening.

Two teenagers from Lydney have been arrested in connection with the assault and remain in police custody.
