Gloucester Rugby: Time to develop the master plan

GLOUCESTER'S coaching staff will spend the day thrashing out the master plan for next term's Premiership play-offs and Heineken Cup dual battle.

Cherry and Whites bosses will make formal presentations during the second day of Nigel Davies' coaching retreat in West Wales.

Rugby director Davies has asked every member of his coaching team to compile a report on this season and also plot the way forward for next term.

Davies believes the Kingsholm coaches can fast-track their plans for next term by spending such focused time together away from Gloucester.

While many of those plans will rightly be kept under wraps, the Cherry and Whites will not hide their desire to break into the Premiership's top-four next term.

Returning to the top tier of European competition will stress Davies' Gloucester squad still further, and the former Wales centre knows that will require careful handling.

Gloucester's management team will look to progress their pre-season plans today, focusing on their warm-up fixture schedule.

The Cherry and Whites will embark on another pre-season training camp like last summer's trip to the French Alps.

Davies and Co will discuss the merits of several potential destinations today, examining when the trip would best fit in around their pre-season plans.

Gloucester players will report for pre-season duty on June 27, and the coaches will spend part of today ironing out the finer details of the schedule for the campaign.

Pleased with progress in the two-day meeting so far, Davies explained: "The first thing we did is review the season, what we've targeted, what we've achieved, where we were good and where we weren't so good.

"And today we'll look at moving it forward and setting targets for next season, for individuals as well as units, the team as a whole and some of the philosophies we want to develop and evolve.

"Coming together like this speeds up this process.

"It is all reasonably formal, with presentations, and there will be a lot of discussion around each area.

"It's a good process, something I've done before, and it takes a lot longer than you might initially think.

"So we need a good two full days' run-up at it.

"And that obviously takes into account all the planning that's gone before that.

"There's been a considerable amount of planning that the coaches have had to put into place before we get to the point where we can actually present.

"So it's about trying to get as many little details right as we can.

Davies cannot prize attention to detail highly enough.

The Gloucester boss gave a warm send-off to a host of Kingsholm stars who will leave the club this summer at the recent awards dinner.

He included the likes of Martyn Thomas and Tommaso d'Apice – who may yet secure contracts for next season – to ensure no contribution was overlooked.

He continued: "I thought it went well, it was fully reflective of where we are at the end of the season, with a certain amount of positivity around with where we're going with our players, management and sponsors.

"It wasn't easy in certain circumstances because players are leaving and others we're not too sure about at the moment.

"But that's the nature of the game, these things happen. It's important to recognise the contribution of players at the club, it's the right thing to do.

"For us to be as successful as we want to be, it's not always the obvious things that we've got to get right, we've got to get everything right around the club.

"And every little thing we get right and get better at, it's going to add to what we are as a team and what Gloucester is, and what the boys play for.

"Whoever has played for Gloucester and worked hard for the shirt deserves to be recognised.

"So it's very important that we hold up what people have done for the club."
