Big City Clean Up goes viral

To support the volunteers taking part in the BiG City Spring clean this Friday residents and visitors are being asked to tweet pics of them joining in.

The Gloucester Twitpick will ask all the city council's twitter and facebook followers to each pick up at least one piece of litter and post a picture of what they have collected.

Once the piece of litter has been picked up the Council is asking people to dispose of the litter in an appropriate manner.

Keeping the City clean costs the City Council over £1million per year – this money could be better spent on other activities.

During the weekend of May 17th -19th extra recycling bins will be available in the city centre outside Shire Hall offices in Westgate Street and it is hoped the city will get behind the event.

Councillor Kathy Williams, Cabinet Member for the Environment said: "I hope this campaign will be a huge success and empower our followers to do something about litter and make them think about disposing of any items.

"Cigarette butts and chewing gum are two of the most difficult items our street cleaners have to deal with and I hope making people aware of this will help reduce litter from our streets.

"The Twitpick will mean that everyone, no matter where they live in the city, can get involved and do their bit to help transform the city."

"We have a number of great events coming up and we need to show the city of at its best."

As part of the BiG City Spring Clean council officers will also be in the bus station to remind people of the fines of dropping litter and that the bus station is a smoke free zone.
