Three historic pieces of local rugby 'silverware' are being donated to the Gloucester Folk Museum.

The North Gloucestershire Combination represents some 17 local clubs and was originally set up around 100 years ago to provide a source of talented local players to Gloucester Rugby Club.

In 1893 the club provided the stunning silver Challenge Cup to nurture competitive competition between City clubs.

The North Gloucestershire Combination Cup has been another source of fierce local competition since 1903.

Both of these cups have now been replaced with newer versions.

The impressive – but less well known – Gloucester Ex-Schoolboys League Shield was inaugurated by the Dean of Gloucester in 1922. It was especially for school leavers who had not yet joined one of the established local clubs. It has not been competed for since around 1930.

The trophies will be accepted by Council Leader, Paul James. He said: "The very history of these trophies and their 'back stories' demonstrates the love affair that Gloucester has had with this magnificent sport. We truly are passionate about rugby in a way that others wish they could emulate.

"This is one of the reasons why Gloucester Rugby Club was selected as a Match Venue for the Rugby World Cup 2015 and Gloucester as a Host City. This is a fitting time for us to be accepting these trophies and we are delighted to do so."

Martin Slatter, President, North Gloucestershire Combination, commented: "The Gloucester Combination is pleased to see their Trophies retired to their rightful place in Gloucester's history. They are iconic symbols of what Rugby Football means to the city and people of Gloucester. The Folk Museum is quite properly their new home."
