STAFF at a Cheltenham shoe shop admitted they were shocked after a chair was thrown through their window.

Police are investigating the criminal damage at Charles Clinkard in Montpellier Walk.

Two men are being hunted by detectives after smashing the window during the early hours of yesterday.

Store manager Jayne Hughes said she was alerted to the damage by police at the scene.

The 37-year-old said: "Montpellier is such a nice area that you don't expect this sort of thing to happen. We've been here for nine years and never had any problems. It's a real shock."

A police spokeswoman added: "At around 2.30am, two men threw a chair at a ground floor window of the shop, causing it to break.

"They then ran off in the direction of Lansdown Road. Both men were described as white and in their early 20s.

"One of them had a distinctive haircut – shaved at the back and sides but longer on top. He was wearing a black jacket or blazer, T-shirt and jeans. The other man was wearing a white top."

Anyone who witnessed the crime is asked to call Gloucestershire police on 101, quoting incident  number 33 of May 9.

Information can also be given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
