Catering staff at Gloucester City Council are working on reviving a local delicacy – the 'Gloucester Tart.'
Flavoured with jam and almonds it was the city's version of a Bakewell tart.
The tart is something of a mystery. It was found in an old recipe book in the City Museum but not much else is known about it.
Now a free tart is to be given to every customer who orders a main course meal at either of the City Council's two museums or at Gloucester Guildhall.
The promotion starts on May 20 which is also the beginning of National Vegetarian Week.
Gloucester Guildhall has been serving vegetarian food for many years. It has a standard menu that contains a full range of vegetarian options as well as an imaginative collection of 'daily specials'. Options at the restaurant range from vegetarian chilli to a meat and fish free Mediterranean platter.
Council Leader, Paul James, commented: " I saw this recipe in a local history book and thought it would be fitting for our museums and cafes to serve it. I think it is only right that we find ways of not only reviving some of our old customs but some of our heritage foods as well."
Catering staff will also be asking customers what their favourite cake of 2013 is – and will then bake and feature it at all of their catering venues.
