ROLLING cheeses were used to fend off evil in Randwick on Sunday.
Steady hands and dry weather helped the whacky pre-Wap tradition spin to success.
A service started at St John the Baptist Church at 10.30am and then the newly blessed Wap cheeses were rolled anti-clockwise around the church.
The honour was given to the Wap mayor Michael Cratchley, 21, Queen of the May Rachael Rutter, 16, and vicar Reverend Brian Woollaston.
Previous mayor Brian Stanley said: "We have always had a dry day for it as far as I can remember and this year was brilliant.
"It's a mix of fun, superstition and a bit of morality."
The tradition dates back to medieval times and was revived in the village in the 1970s.
The cheeses represent the areas produce and cattle and are rolled around the parish to ward off evil from outside.
The Wap Fair will take place next Saturday with a procession, morris dancers and music.
