CARS parked close to GCHQ have been attacked by vandals.

Criminal damage was caused to four vehicles which had been left in Cornmeadow Drive.

Scratches were made along the cars, apparently on purpose.

It comes just a few weeks after 18 cars were attacked in nearby Fiddler's Green Lane.

Community leaders have suggested the keying of the vehicles could be linked to residents' "frustration" at some GCHQ workers using the street to park their cars for the day.

Police are not ruling out angry neighbours who may have a vendetta against workers at the Government listening post.

However, in the latest incident, which happened between 5pm and 6pm on Wednesday, three of the cars are owned by residents, with the fourth belonging to a visitor to one of the homes.

Sergeant Mark Stephens admitted there had been problems in the past between residents and GCHQ staff.

He added: "Historically, there have been incidents where employees from GCHQ that have parked in the area have had criminal damage caused to their cars. It's believed this was due to frustration at the volume of cars parking in this and surrounding roads.

"There is no specific information to suggest that this week's damage was caused due to this dissatisfaction.

"However, we are aware that this is an area of concern for both employees and residents and as such we have been increasing our patrols in the area and have contacted GCHQ to request their assistance with the matter.

"We are also taking a number of tactical options to gather intelligence about offences and to arrest offenders."

Last month, Crime Mapper figures from Police.uk showed thefts of or from vehicles, and interference with vehicles, steadily rose monthly from 19 last October to 28 in February.

But Gloucestershire police said there had been a reduction in incidents in the last six months, compared to the same period in 2011/12. Criminal damage was down from 340 to 332; theft from vehicles from 340 to 332; theft of vehicles from 71 to 45; aggravated vehicle taking from six to five and vehicle interference from 26 to 16.

Anyone with information about the incidents should call 101, quoting incident number 394 of May 1.
