Police warning after Forest of Dean tax scam bid

RESIDENTS are being warned about a potential scam.

It involves companies cold-calling householders and claiming to be able to arrange council tax refunds through a property band revaluation.

A Forest resident contacted the police and the council after receiving a visit from a company requesting an up-front administration fee of £295.

The company behind the visit advised the resident they may be entitled to a rebate on the basis that their home may be in the wrong council tax band.

They were told the company would arrange for the property's council tax band to be revaluated and that they would receive a rebate if the bracket it was in was found to be too high.

A Gloucestershire police spokesman said: "A woman from Lydney reported she had been approached on this matter and was very upset by the entire incident. We would always urge people to be wary of cold callers and to make checks to ascertain their legitimacy before going any further."
