COCAINE worth £2,400 was found down the boxer shorts of a Cheltenham man after he was pulled over by police for driving without an MOT.

Andrew Walsh avoided a prison sentence after pleading guilty to possession of the class A drug with intent to supply.

Gloucester Crown Court heard the 25-year-old was stopped by police in Blaisdon Way on September 6 last year for having no MOT on his Renault Megane.

Officers found two wraps of cocaine on him, worth £83.

Prosecutor Julian Kesner said when he was searched at Cheltenham Police Station, police found another 48.66grams of the drug, worth £2,400 down his boxer shorts.

Defending, Daniel Woodman said Walsh, who lives with his parents in William Gough Close, Springbank, was a heavy drug user at the time.

He told the court Walsh had agreed to look after the packages belonging to drug dealers for a while as there was a "lot of police presence" around them.

He said: "There was some pressure put on him and you will know drug dealers are not the nicest people in the world. There was coercion, intimidation and pressure.

"He did agree to help them and keep hold of the four wraps just for a short period of time and unfortunately he ended up being the taxi."

Recorder Peter Towler said: "If he kept his MOT up-to-date, this would not have happened."

Mr Woodman added that Walsh was since off drugs, had the support of his family and girlfriend and had even enlisted the help of a personal trainer to help turn his life around.

Recorder Towler sentenced him to 12 months' jail, suspended for two years, with 12 months supervision, 200 hours unpaid work and ordered he paid £300 costs.

He said: "You have got to stay out of trouble for two years at least, but I am hoping that you will stay out of trouble for the rest of your life."
