RACING through Cheltenham and leaping off of objects may seem an odd way to find a thrill.

But for one man, it is the best place in the world to visit in the name of his sport.

Jordan Wilcox has travelled around the planet as he takes part in free running.

But the 20-year-old has found that it is always Cheltenham where he feels the most exhilarated.

Jordan said: "When I walk around town I get this vision, where I look at buildings or objects and imagine what stunts I could do with them."

Free running – also known as parkour – developed out of military obstacle course training and has evolved into the art of high performing controlled flips and jumps.

Experts at the sport can incorporate buildings and objects into their routine as they race around towns and cities. Jordan is a self-taught free runner but is now teaching his skills to budding youngsters wanting to be part of the craze in Cheltenham.

He said there was always a great deal of interest from the youngsters wanting to try something different.

Skills

And he admitted that one of the challenges free runners faced was learning the skills they needed to take part in the sport safely.

He added: "It is like the new skateboarding. There are lots of kids who are interested in learning it but don't know where to start.

"As a child I was always bouncing off things and climbing trees and it all started from there.

"Free running is about conditioning your body to be disciplined.

"It is not all about jumping off buildings.

"I always say it is more impressive to be more controlled and longer at curb level than doing a quicker trick from up high."

Jordan has been teaching in primary schools and recently held an open day at All Saints' Academy with pupils learning the basics.

But now he is giving novices the chance to benefit from private lessons.

Jordan said: "I take people into town and show them the opportunities there are for free running, all around us.

"It is a great way to get extremely fit and enjoy yourself."

Jordan has recently returned from an event for Nissan in Algeria which involved him flipping over cars.

He admitted that he was pleased with the success he had found, turning his hobby into something more.

He added: "It's great how far I have come, considering I taught myself. I free run pretty much every day and I love it."
