Gloucestershire skipper Michael Klinger said he had no regrets about going into bat after wining the toss against Northamptonshire on Wednesday..
He said: "We felt conditions would stay pretty much the same overhead for the first couple of days and decided to try and get runs on the board.
"The ball seamed around in the morning session and we probably lost a couple of wickets too many. The Northants bowlers put the ball in good areas and made it difficult for us.
"A few of our guys got starts and there are no excuses regarding the pitch. We needed one or two to go on to a decent score."
Cameron Herring top scored with 43 in his first LV=County Championship innings as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 192 by Northants on the opening day of the match at Bristol.
And the 18-year-old wicketkeeper was praised by Klinger, who said: "Cameron's effort was fantastic in his first hit in the Championship. And I thought Liam Norwell really stuck his chest out in the final session to bowl just as we want him to.
"That has set the standard for tomorrow. We didn't always get it right with the ball, but conditions remain helpful and if we can put it in the right areas in the morning we can stay right in the game."
Herring said: "Getting a few runs is a great boost and hopefully I can bat grittily and go big with a score before too long."
Updates will follow throughout the remaining three days of the match.
