Massive emergency rescue exercise in Gloucestershire

Hovercrafts, helicopters and sniffer dogs were part an all-action search and rescue exercise in Gloucestershire.

More than 400 emergency workers descended on Cotswold Water Park, near Cirencester, to simulate the kind of response which would be needed in the event of a mid-air aircraft collision.

They combed the area by land and water, searching for pretend survivors.

Dummy bodies and limbs were left strewn around the park to simulate the scenes of devastation which would happen in the event of such a catastrophe.

Leaders behind the exercise, which included search and rescue workers from across the region, said it was a great way to prepare for a worst case emergency scenario.

Jon Hall the county's chief fire officer and chair of Gloucestershire Local Resilience Forum, said: "This exercise simulated a tragedy on a massive scale.

"It's something we hope will never happen in the county.

"However, should the worst happen, it's vitally important that not only are we prepared as a fire and rescue service, but that we are ready to respond.

"The lessons learned from large-scale incidents such as these are invaluable for our understanding of how to formulate an appropriate response and, most importantly, keep residents in the county safe."

Neil Mantle, operations superintendent for Gloucestershire police, said: "This exercise is part of a routine training programme that ensures we are all prepared in an emergency on this scale.

"We use them, not only to test our procedures, but to learn from them as well. We are constantly striving to improve our ability to protect those who live, work in and visit our county."
