WHAT better way to start learning a subject than to get right into the middle of the action between the Spartans and the Athenians?

Pupils in Year 4 at St Edward's Junior School spent a day learning about the lives of the ancient Greeks.

John Connelly, nine, said it was great fun being put into two teams in the sports hall and facing each other for combat.

"We were given instructions which included moving close together to make all our shields into a solid wall before advancing on the enemy," he said.

Lin Davis, head of history at St Edward's, said: "This is such a valuable way for the children to start a new topic by being completely absorbed in a practical way.

"Murray Edwards, our Greek Hoplite, gets the children involved. They take on board everything he says and they all left the day enthused."
