Today we meet the final set of candidates contesting a county council division in Cheltenham: St Paul's and Swindon. Emily Croft, Conservative At twenty years of age, Emily is one of the youngest candidates in this election, but brings with her energy, enthusiasm and a real passion for her area. Emily is currently a student at the University of Gloucestershire, where she is studying Geography. She lives on St Paul's road, in the heart of the division. She is approachable and a good listener, already building up a reputation as being able to help solve problems in the St Paul's area. Her priorities as a councillor would be improving the relationship between students and other local residents and helping the area get the recognition it deserves as a central part of Cheltenham. Outside politics, Emily enjoys playing hockey and running. Bernard Fisher, Liberal Democrat Bernie Fisher was born in Cheltenham and has lived here for most of his life. He loves Cheltenham and will always work towards improving, protecting and conserving it. Bernie is married with two children and three granddaughters. Now retired, Bernie has had a varied working life at Smith's Industries, DFS, GCHQ and RACO Processes, a company started by himself with a partner that did chemical engineering mainly for the aerospace industry. Bernie was elected to the Borough Council in May 2008 and has enjoyed this role, throwing himself wholeheartedly into solving any problems presented to him by the electorate. He has a passionate interest in protecting the greenbelt and, through his role on the Planning Committee, has tried to ensure that it is not encroached upon around our town. As your County Councillor, one of his objectives would be to work towards improving the appalling state of local roads. Ann Homer, Ukip I Joined UKIP to stop our government handing total control of our country to unelected and undemocratic bureaucrats in Europe. We are surrendering more and more of our freedoms to Europe. Two broken promises: 1) that we would be given a referendum on our continued membership of the EU, and 2): that there would be stricter controls on immigration from the EU. Lack of immigration controls means that we are having to build even more houses on our previously protected countryside and Green Belt Land, threatening our environment too. Powers hidden in new NHS laws can now force GP's to open up every part of our local health services to private companies.( Privatization by the back door ) We were promised this would never happen. UKIP is the only party speaking out against the constant expansion of European directives into every area of public life. The only way we can "take back" some of our powers from Brussels is by coming out of Europe, then we can renegotiate and have control of our country once again.
