FIRST aid training paid off when a Gloucester Rugby fan saw a supporter collapse in front him.
When 78-year-old David Youdan suffered a heart attack, garden centre manager Kevin Morris put his employer's first aid training into practice.
Kevin, 48, from Abbeymead, was delighted to hear Mr Youdan is recovering in hospital.
"I was walking back with my wife Vicky and there was a group of people around a guy, and then he just fell to the floor," said Kevin, who is a warehouse manager at Blooms in Evesham Road, Cheltenham.
"I had just been on a first aid course at work, and I said to Vicky I should do something.
"It was surreal and very harrowing but I am really pleased to hear he made it."
Kevin and a London Welsh fan administered CPR in Estcourt Road after the Gloucester - Exiles fixture on March 22, and medics have since told Mr Youdan's relatives he is lucky to be alive.
Mr Youdan's granddaughter Saskia Willemstein tweeted her thanks on the social networking site Twitter. And after Cherry and Whites fly-half Freddie Burns re-tweeted her message, Mr Morris revealed he was one of the people who helped out.
"It is amazing," said Saskia's dad, Vincent Willemstein, of Linwell Close, Cheltenham (Mr Youdan's son-in-law).
"He is getting better day by day and we were told he was very lucky. I was standing with him and my son Christian in Estcourt Road after the match and suddenly he went down.
"All these people came to help and we are so grateful. What they did saved his life."
He plans to meet Mr Morris and thank him personally. Mr Youdan is recovering in Cheltenham General Hospital.
