THE number of people prepared to donate their organs have doubled in the county, a clinical expert says.
But there are still many others waiting for help.
Between April 2012 and March 2013, six people from Gloucestershire died while waiting for an organ.
And, as of Sunday, there were 63 people from the county still waiting for a donor.
Cleeve school girl Abi Owen, 12, passed away in February this year, after a brain haemorrhage.
Her mother, Kelly, was one of the grieving people who had to make a decision about what to do with her organs.
And she decided to donate them to save the lives of four other people.
Mrs Owen said her daughter always put others before herself, and had unwittingly made the decision only weeks before her death.
"I have signed up for it myself, and it's something I'm always on about," Mrs Owen said.
"I had heard on the radio before Abi died about how much comfort it brought to the recipients.
"I said to my husband we might want to consider organ donation because it might have been a source of comfort at a difficult time. I believed Abi would have wanted to do it.
"She was the kind of girl who was always helping people and it was a natural thing for her.
"We later found out that they had discussed about organ donation in school, and I realised a week later that she had done a project about why organ donation is a good thing.
"It was amazing that she did that.
"She was only 12 years old and she had made that sort of decision. We knew we made the right choice."
For 58-year-old Anne Wilkins, from Prestbury, a human kidney donation last February "gave her back her life".
The mother-of-two, who had suffered a rare kidney disease, said: "I can't really put it into words. It has given me my life back, and I am really grateful for it. I can play with my grandchildren and have energy I never had before.
"It is wonderful. The transplant has been a success, and I have decided to be a donor."
Dr Alex D'Agapeyeff, clinical lead for organ donation at the county hospitals trust, said: "While the figures are good, and it shows all the hard work which has gone in the last five year, it does show that there is still a lot of work to be done, even with the improvements we've seen."
