CHELTENHAM Town boss Mark Yates has apologised for his foul-mouthed outburst after Saturdays's 2-0 defeat at Plymouth Argyle.
An angry Yates was captured on camera directing expletives towards a Robins supporter who he felt had taken his criticism of substitute Kaid Mohamed too far after the final whistle.
Yates said: "I want to apologise for the use of bad language aimed at a supporter following Saturday's match.
"My use of language was of course unacceptable and for anyone that I have offended, I am sorry.
"I took my players over to our fans at the end of the game to thank them for travelling so far and supporting us, as I do every away game.
"I saw one supporter approach one of my players and swear and shout at him in a very aggressive manner.
"The player in question had only come on as a sub with the score already at 2-0 and I am sorry to say I reacted to this supporter.
"We are a close-knit team and I always back my players but I certainly regret what I did and apologise for any offence caused by my language.
"It was a frustrating day for myself, the players and of course the supporters.
"It is now important to put this behind us with three big games approaching, starting with Gillingham next weekend."
The Robins also released the following statement, condemning the use of all foul language.
It read: "Cheltenham Town would like to thank all supporters that travelled to Plymouth Argyle yesterday to support the team.
"The board of directors deplore the use of obscene language both on and off the pitch.
"Over the years the club has worked hard to create and foster a family friendly atmosphere at its matches.
"Fans, players and staff all have a responsibility and a major part to play in making sure that the game of football and the Robins are seen in a positive light."
Yates labelled Cheltenham's performance at Plymouth as "pathetic and hopeless" as they wasted a chance to press their top-three claims, with Burton Albion, Northampton Town, Exeter City and Rotherham United all losing.
"We didn't turn up and I can't say that too often about my players, but we were still in the hotel," Yates said. "It was not good enough, we were well and truly beaten and we were lucky to get away with only 2-0.
"We didn't cause them problems, but we caused ourselves plenty so it was not good enough by a country mile.
"Bar Scotty Brown and Byron Harrison we were hopeless and everyone is frustrated, but nobody more than myself.
"We were abject at best, but we live to fight another day so we'll lick our wounds and prepare for next week."
Saturday's opponents Gillingham secured their promotion to League One with a 1-0 win over Torquay United.
Cheltenham then travel to Exeter a week later before finishing the regular season with a home match against Bradford City, and the race for third place looks set to go to the wire.
