Christians marched in Easter witness across Gloucestershire today.

In Stroud, well over 100 people of all ages joined the annual procession from the top of the High Street and around the town centre before ending up for worship on the Subscription Rooms forecourt.

Giant crosses were borne and banners waved as hymns were sung and drama presented on the Good Friday march.

"We have brought the church out into town," the Rev Mathew  Page, a member of the Stroud Team Ministry said.

In Cam, their annual procession of witness started from St James' Dursley at 9am. Passing St George's Cam, a cross was carried up Cam Peak at about 11am.

John Wilkes said the Good Friday 'Churches Together' event for Cam and Dursley parishioners attracted a record number of attendees.

He said: "Dursley Police kindly volunteered their services to control traffic as the procession made its way up Church Street, Cam. The large procession gathered even more followers outside St George's church in Upper Cam.

"I took the long way round to the Peak car park driving up through Ashmead. The car park was nearly full. I parked on some gravel. A lady drew up beside me saying 'Hello Mr Wilkes - I see your photos in the paper. Can I park on that grass beside you?'.

"As she drove on to the bank her front wheels began to spin and her car drifted sideways on the slippery surface; and she was heading to impact the side of my parked car.

"I placed myself between my car and hers and pushed. Folks rushed to the rescue.

"I just said to the lady - Stop, turn off the motor, don't get out and don't move an inch'. I then reversed my car out - and when I was well clear, the lady enlisted the help of a kindly Dursley police officer to reverse her car out on to safe territory!

"By now the procession had arrived in force - well stewarded by our local police.

"The first 'Station of the Cross' in that area was by the car park on Cam Peak. A lady played her flute and the sound echoed over the slopes through the portable loudspeaker. Hymns were sang. More volunteers were called on to carry the cross up to the saddle between Long Down and Cam Peak. The sun shone.

"More hymns were sang up on the saddle. I made a bee-line for the summit - on a route 'not for the fainthearted'!

"A further set of volunteers were requested for the final assault on the summit.

"The sun shone even brighter. Atop the peak though, followers were still breaking ice on the little pond in the dippy up there. Children enjoyed the excitement.

"The cross was borne to the lofty heights - and a strong emotional response was elicited recalling Jesus's climb to Calvary on the first Good Friday. Folks gathered round the cross and banner on the top of Cam Peak and further hymns were sung.

"I left a little early to remove my car from the car park before the throng descended and any more traffic chaos ensued!"
