A permanent memorial to the man who made Gloucester Rugby a leading force in the professional game was unveiled before the Premiership clash with London Welsh yesterday.

The limestone sculpture of a ball in memory of Tom Walkinshaw with the words 'Unconquered Faith Triumphs' around the base was carved by Gloucester Cathedral masons.

The club chairman and owner died in December 2010, more than 13 years after he took over at Kingsholm as the game got to grips with professionalism.

His sons Ryan and Sean and widow Martine attended a short dedication with cathedral archdeacon, Canon Neil Heavisides and three choristers, next to the ticket office.

As well as shaping relations between England's top clubs and turning Gloucester in to a major professional power and bringing world famous internationals to the club, he owned the Arrows Formula One team.

After success in touring car and Le Mans racing, he moved in to F1, where he also brought Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn into the sport, and was key to Benetton's recruitment of Michael Schumacher in 1991.
